An iconic crossing over the Houston Ship Channel
Built to address critical transportation needs across one of the nation's busiest maritime corridors, The Ship Channel Bridge Program is an iconic project for Houston and for Harris County with a construction cost of over $1.3 billion. The bridge ensures seamless movement for commuters, commercial vehicles, and heavy freight while allowing massive cargo ships to pass beneath. This vital link supports Houston's global energy and logistics industries, reduces congestion, and connects communities across the region.
The project consists of building twin bridges over the Houston Ship Channel in support of widening the Sam Houston Tollway between SH 225 and I-10. The bridges will double the number of lanes—four in each direction—along with full shoulder lanes and a more gradual climb designed to keep traffic flowing faster.
This is considered a critical project for dealing with the Ship Channel's heavy and growing traffic. Roughly 60,000 vehicles per day cross the existing Ship Channel bridge, and with a major spike in truck traffic and commuters expected, the number of vehicles will likely jump to 158,000 vehicles per day by 2035.
The twin bridges will run side-by-side and be connected at key points, including at the two main towers connecting the suspension cables that hold the main deck. The cable-stayed bridge with towers over 500 feet tall will hold the main span at 1,320 feet in length, making it the sixth longest main span in the US and the second longest in Texas.
Construction materials testing on the north section
ATL's scope of work for this project was to provide construction materials testing services in support of the construction of the north section of each toll bridge. ATL has the in-house expertise, manpower and testing resources to complete all required services for this project.
The Ship Channel Bridge project required Associated Testing Laboratories to maintain operations in a challenging environment characterized by marine corridor conditions, industrial traffic, and the performance standards that protect both transportation and maritime operations.
Our team's ability to deliver consistent, reliable test results under these demanding conditions contributed directly to the successful completion of this vital transportation link.
