Flood mitigation for the Hunting Bayou Watershed
Located within the Hunting Bayou Watershed, the Wallisville Outfall System along the H125-00-00-E001 Channel serves a critical drainage area of approximately 4.5 square miles in east Houston — an area shaped by decades of industrial growth, transportation infrastructure, and dense urban development. The system originates near North Wayside Drive and Wallisville Road and conveys stormwater eastward into Hunting Bayou, acting as a primary outlet for multiple storm sewer networks, roadside ditches, and City of Houston drainage systems.
Historically, this watershed has experienced recurring flooding, with documented structural impacts and roadway inundation affecting key community and economic assets, including major distribution centers and essential service facilities. Beyond infrastructure, this project directly impacts the people who live and work in the Hunting Bayou area — reducing the frequency and severity of flooding that disrupts daily life and bringing greater reliability to neighborhoods that have historically faced repeated storm impacts, helping create safer, more stable conditions for residents and businesses alike.
Geotechnical investigation for channel & basin construction
ATL is focused on a geotechnical investigation to support the planned construction of the stormwater detention basin and channel improvements, providing the subsurface data necessary to advance right-of-way acquisition, design, and construction. Channel improvements and detention basin construction require careful evaluation of slope stability, soil strength, and groundwater monitoring — particularly in areas where increased flow capacity and hydraulic efficiency are critical. The presence of existing drainage systems and urban development further constrains design and construction, requiring precise geotechnical understanding to minimize risk and ensure constructability.
