Extending a corridor built for a county that refuses to stand still
Fort Bend County's story over the past two decades has been one of extraordinary growth, where open land has steadily given way to thriving neighborhoods, schools, and opportunity. The Fort Bend Parkway is a relatively recent but important addition to the Houston region's transportation network, a corridor shaped by a voter-backed, locally driven vision to create stronger connections between communities and the greater Houston region. Since opening in 2004, the Parkway has continued to evolve, extending its reach to meet the needs of a county that refuses to stand still.
Subsequent phases extended the roadway farther south into Fort Bend County, with additional segments opening in the following years to serve expanding residential developments and commercial corridors. The parkway was designed as a controlled-access toll road with frontage roads, allowing it to function both as a regional mobility corridor and a local access route. This phase of improvements, extending the Parkway westward toward the Rabbs Prairie Road corridor, represents the next chapter.
Geotechnical engineering for mainlanes, bridges & drainage
ATL provided geotechnical engineering services, delivering the subsurface understanding required to support the design of mainlanes, bridge structures, and drainage-related features that will carry this corridor forward. What makes this project unique is not just the soil itself, but the scale of transformation occurring above it.
As the Parkway extends toward Rabbs Prairie Road, soil conditions require careful evaluation of settlement potential, soil strength, and long-term performance. Bridge elements and roadway embankments must work in harmony with the ground below, while drainage-related features depend on stable, predictable soil behavior to function as intended.
